NewsGator Accepted Folksonomy Request

I’ve just got this e-mail from Leland Rucker, Content Manager at NewsGator Technologies:

Hi, thanks for your request for inclusion in the NewsGator taxonomy. It has been accepted and can be found in the technology news category.

I’d also like you to consider adding a NewsGator subscribe button to your site. Simply adding the button will allow hundreds of thousands of NewsGator users the ability to subscribe to your RSS feed with a single click, give you stronger RSS presence and increase your site’s visibility. You can do that by going to the NewsGator home page, clicking on the NewsGator button and following the easy directions.

Thanks in advance, Leland

It means that after sign in NewsGator users can find ITC Server Blog in the Technology News category in the NewsGator taxonomy and subscribe it.

What is NewsGator? NewsGator is one of the online feed (RSS, Atom) readers. When I saw RSS first and found out what RSS is, I thought to upload RSS content to different website. I even wrote a RSS Reader with JavaScript. Simply get the RSS link, render it and show it whereever you want. There are a number of different types of readers: web-based, desktop, Outlook based, Firefox Plugin, etc… I have been using My Yahoo recently. I tried the -maybe- most famous online feed reader Bloglines before. Since I read “The State of Online Feed Readers” article by Frank Guber at TechCrunch, I decided to try different feed readers. If you look at comments on this article, you will see that there is a very hot discussion about online feed readers. You even can find a podcast called “Battle of Online Feed Readers” with NewsGator, Attensa, Rojo, and Feedlongue at TalkCrunch. So last week I signed up to NewsGator to try. It is pretty cool!

I would want to try Rojo and others. If someone wants to follow up all news and articles which are interested in, online or offline feed (RSS) readers certainly should be used. If you use an online feed reader, you can use it anywhere. It is clear that if you have a blog or a website, you have to have a RSS/Atom feed for your readers.

You may be noticed those two words: Folksonomy and Taxonomy. What do they mean? Let’s look at Wikipedia.

A “folksonomy” is a collaboratively generated, open-ended labeling system that enables Internet users to categorize content such as Web pages, online photographs, and Web links. The freely chosen labels — called tags — help to improve search engine effectiveness because content is categorized using a familiar, accessible, and shared vocabulary. The labeling process is called tagging. Two widely cited examples of websites using folksonomic tagging are [Flickr] and [del.icio.us].
